Creative Enterprise Scaling Up is a brand new 5-month business development programme, to support companies working in the screen sector.

The programme has been devised with industry leaders for screen businesses who are looking to develop and grow their business.

Who is it for? 

Creative Enterprise are looking to recruit a cohort of up to 15 diverse screen businesses (this can include film/TV, games, immersive, createch) who have the potential and ambition to scale their business. We encourage applications from those who are currently underrepresented in the screen industry.   

The Scaling Up programme is only available to businesses based in England at the moment. If you are based in any of the devolved administrations (Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland), your application will be automatically declined.  

We are aiming for a balanced regional representation across England with at least 80% of businesses coming from the regions outside of London.

What is involved? 

The Creative Enterprise Scaling Up programme will consist of 6 intensive workshops as well as 4 business coaching sessions across 5 months. The workshops will be a mix of in-person and online sessions.

Eligibility & Fees

The Creative Enterprise Scaling Up programme is specifically looking to support screen based narrative businesses working in storytelling for the moving image (this can include film/TV, games, immersive, createch) and who have the potential and ambition to scale their business.  

To be eligible you must: 

  • Be a founder (or co-founder) of a of a screen based narrative business working in storytelling for the moving image (this can include film/TV, games, immersive, createch) 
  • Your business must be based (registered or have a trading address) in England. 
  • Have successfully taken a product to market or launched a support service that enables narrative storytelling. 
  • Your business must have generated revenue in the last year.  
  • Be committed to the long-term growth of your business. 

 

Fees

The fee for participation in the programme is £250 +VAT per company. 

Creative Enterprise is a BFI Lottery funded programme  – overall, the support including group learning sessions, coaching and personalised mentoring  you receive during the Scaling Up programme is valued at over £5,000 per person. There is also a bursary (contribution towards travel and accommodation) available for in-person sessions if needed.

Programme Delivery Schedule

Broad topics will include:

Finance & investment   

Product and Market Reach 

Pitching, Sales and Marketing  

Leadership and Culture 

Cross sector collaboration 

 

The programme will run for a course of 5 months.   

Workshop 1- 7th February 2024 (In person– Location TBC) 
Workshop 2- 12 & 13 March AM (Online) 
Workshop 3- 17  & 18 April  AM (Online)
Workshop 4- 15 May (In person– Location TBC) 
Workshop 5- 111 and 12 June AM (Online) 
Workshop 6- 3rd Jul (In person- Location TBC) 

Workshop dates are fixed and you must be able to attend, 121 coaching sessions are to be made at a time suitable for both you and your mentor. You must also be committed to building in time to shape your business plan between the workshops. 

This programme is an exceptional opportunity. Whilst we understand the needs of screen companies and global working patterns, non-attendance/cancellation of booked 1-2-1 coaching sessions may directly impact the effectiveness of this programme.

At the end of the Scaling Up programme you will –    

  • Have created and refined a comprehensive plan to scale their business.  
  • Have a deeper understanding of their business better and be confident in its future growth. 
  • Developed a network of peers across the screen sector.  
  • Gained an understanding of the benefits of cross sector collaboration within screen, and how it may benefit their business directly.  
  • Have learnt about the current funding and investment landscape and honed their pitching skills. 
  • Gained insider insights into all key areas of running a successful business from industry experts 
  • Become confident in their leadership, creating the right company culture and knowing how to hire the right talent to push their business forward. 
  • Have received expert advice through 1-2-1 business coaching throughout the programme, tailored to the needs of their business.

Assessment and Criteria

Applications will be assessed by the Creative Enterprise team. We recognise that applications may contain commercially sensitive information and all applications will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. We will typically consider the track record of your business and its management, the feasibility of your future growth plans, and the impact that our support might have on your company. Applications close on 4 December 2023. Please note the team may wish to set up a telephone/ video conference interview as part of the assessment, which will take place during December 2023/January 2024. All applicants will be informed in writing by 31 January 2024 whether or not their application has been successful. Due to the volume of applications, we regret that feedback on unsuccessful applications cannot be provided. Successful applicants will be expected to commit to the programme in full by signing an offer letter and returning to Creative UK by 31st January 2024.
